Conference "Connecting Biobanks"
- Date:
- 22 Nov 2010
- Location:
- Academic Medical Center, Meibergdreef 15, 1105 AZ Amsterdam
Large-scale cooperation between biobanks has been successful on a global scale in the past two years. Collaboration between biobanks is essential for the future of biomedical science. For biobanks to be interoperable their content should be meaningfully linked. Biomedical and bioinformatics research groups in the Netherlands are joining forces with international partners to reach this goal. Plans and prototypic are the topics of the conference 'Connecting Biobanks'.
The preliminary conference program includes:
- Keynote presentations by renowned international speakers: Dr. David Cox (Pfizer), Josh Sommer (Chordoma Foundation), Prof. dr. Gert-Jan van Ommen (BBMRI-NL), Prof. dr. Kurt Zatloukal (BBRMI-EU), Prof. dr. Carole Goble (University of Manchester), Dr. Barend Mons (NBIC/CWA), Prof. dr. Paul Burton (University of Leicester)
- Dedicated workshops addressing specific topics, such as data interoperability
- BBMRI-NL’s official kick-off
- A poster market, presenting BBMRI-NL projects aimed at enrichment and harmonization
- Formal inauguration of the Global Concept Web Alliance and launch project
- Presentation and demonstration of CWA partners’ developed technology and applications
- Ample opportunity to interact with colleagues
The conference launches the Dutch BBRMI and is a joint effort of BBMRI-NL, CWA and NBIC.

BBMRI-NL is the Dutch national biobanking initiative, linking over 140 existing Dutch biobanks. Within the 'hub and spoke' structure of the European Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure, BBMRI-NL is the Dutch national 'hub'. www.bbmri.nl
CWA The Concept Web Alliance is a global collaborative community addressing the increasing problems associated with information overload and the interoperability of data. CWA aims to be an ‘organization of collaborating organizations’.
NBIC The Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre is a collaborative institute of the bioinformatics groups in the Netherlands. Together, these groups perform cutting-edge research, develop novel tools and support platforms, create an e-science infrastructure and educate the next generations of bioinformaticians. NBIC is one of the initiators and founding sponsors of CWA.
