Job description

Two Ph.D. fellowships are available in the Microbial Genomics and Bioinformatics group of Prof. Glöckner at the MPI-Bremen. The group is focused on the bioinformatics side of modern microbial genomics, phylogeny and data integration, see www.microbial-genomics.de.

The Ph.D. fellowships are part of a multi-national research projects MAMBA (Marine Metagenomics for new Biotechnological Applications) and MIMAS (Microbial Interactions in MArine Systems) funded by the European Union (http://mamba.bangor.ac.uk/) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (www.mimas-projekt.de), respectively. The task will be to participate in mining large amounts of next-generation sequencing data from marine habitats, with a focus on ecological functioning as well as enzyme candidates with potential biotechnological applicability.

Job requirements

Applicants should have proven proficiencies or strong interests in some of the following fields:

  • genomics or metagenomics
  • bacterial metabolism
  • BASH scripting
  • A scripting language (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby)
  • relational databases (SQL)
  • Grid Computing or Cloud Computing
  • C or C++ or JAVA
  • Statistics (e.g. Matlab or R)
  • Webservers & webservices
  • Data visualization

Having worked on large datasets, in particular next-generation sequencing or expression data is a plus.

If you have some of the above mentioned skills, are interested in working on rare datasets from interesting environments in order to solving meaningful biological questions with applied bioinformatics, and are willing to integrate into a team then we would like to hear from you.

Job benefits

This position requires a Master’s or equivalent in bioinformatic, computer science or a related field. Salary will be the regular amount for Ph.D. students in Germany (TVÖD 13/2).
