CTMM and NBIC gave insight into DNA at Technology Week
08 Jun 2012
What is my genetic identity? What does my DNA look like? Can I find my DNA online? Answers to these questions were given during the Dutch Technology Week at the NBIC/CTMM-stand.
The Dutch Technology Week (DTW) is an initiative of the Eindhoven Brainport Region to show the public “how enjoyable and challenging it is to work on inventions which change the world”. The Centre for Translational Molecular Medicine (CTMM) and the bioinformatics@school project of NBIC demonstrated the life science technology inventions in a stand in the “High Tech Discovery Route”.
Visitors were guided throughout DNA-research, starting with isolating DNA from buccal and concluding in getting lost in online DNA-databases. Hienke Sminia, NBIC: “Many visitors came to us with questions like: “Tell me, is DNA a protein?” or “What is the difference between diagnostic testing and DNA-profiling used in forensic science?” For the youngest visitors we offered the possibility to build molecules from candy and toothpicks.”
