External Grants and Funding

NGI Distinguished Visiting Scientist Stipend

The Distinguished Visiting Scientist Stipend offers top researchers associated with one of the NGI Genomics Centres (such as NBIC) an opportunity to perform research at a foreign top institute. The programme also enables foreign top researchers to come to the Netherlands for a research project at one of the NGI Genomics Centres. More information on the NGI website.

NWO Horizon

The Horizon programme is set up as a breeding ground for talented researchers active in genomics and/or bioinformatics.
It aims to:

  • focus on the development of individual researchers
  • support innovative research
  • stimulate valorisation of research results

Horizon offers early career genomics and bioinformatics researchers attractive career prospects within academia and research institutions by stimulating and supporting them to set up or expand their own research area and research group.
Horizon aims to promote and coordinate outstanding and visionary fundamental research by offering researchers the freedom to realize their ideas and concepts beyond existing disciplines. The research supported by the Horizon programme is future-oriented. Researchers are given the opportunity to respond rapidly to new hypotheses or technologies. In addition, the Horizon programme seeks to achieve valorisation of the results obtained in the research projects. Project leaders are therefore expected to adopt an active attitude towards valorisation. More information on the NGI website.

NGI-Venture Challenge

The NGI Venture Challenge is an excellent opportunity for potential spin-offs to receive coaching and advice on various business aspects. It helps them turn a promising idea into a sound business case. The best business venture pitch receives an attractive prize. More information on the NGI website.

NGI-Preseed Grant

Aim of the Preseed Grant is to help potential young start-ups in genomics (and bioinformatics!) demonstrate the business opportunities of their research results, and proceed towards commercial application of knowledge.
However promising the results (and patents) from fundamental research may be, it is always difficult for start-ups to find an investor. Fact is that potential investors need to be convinced by further applied research demonstrating the business opportunities of a new technology. More information on the NGI website.

BioGeneration Ventures (NWO and NGI)

BioGeneration Ventures invests in Dutch start-up and early stage life sciences companies. The BioGeneration Ventures team is specialized in the evaluation and management of early stage companies and their involvement goes beyond the financial investment. They work closely with scientists, academic institutions, entrepreneurs and industry experts to accelerate the development and to optimize the commercial potential of their portfolio company's technologies. More information on the BioGeneration Ventures website.
