Principal Research

Jack Leunissen is full professor of Bioinformatics and head of the Laboratory of Bioinformatics at Wageningen Univerisity and Research Centre (WUR), the Netherlands. He studied chemistry at Nijmegen University, and holds a holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the same university. Starting in 1986 he founded and managed the bioinformatics and genomics section of the Dutch National Centre for Bioinformatics and Cheminformatics, CAOS/CAMM Center. In 2000 he was also appointed senior lecturer in Bioinformatics at the CMBI, Nijmegen University; end of 2002 he moved to Wageningen University to take up the position of chair in Bioinformatics at WUR.

The Laboratory of Bioinformatics is involved in many of the national research projects of NBIC, the Centre of Biosystems Genomics (CBSG), and the Nutrigenomics Consortium in human, animal, plant and fungal genomics. His personal research interests include (not exclusively) integrative bioinformatics, sequence analysis, phylogenomics, and text mining.

Jack Leunissen was chairman of EMBnet, the world spanning network of national and specialist bioinformatics centres”, in which currently more than forty institutes in over thirty nations on six continents collaborate. He was co-ordinator of two EMBnet EU projects in the 4th and 5th Framework Programme, and a partner in several others.

He is founder and director of the Dutch bioinformatics company Dalicon B.V.
