Principal Research
Irene Nooren (born Zevenbergen, The Netherlands in 1969, PhD in 1999 at Utrecht University, in The Netherlands) is a structural biologist who turned to bioinformatics in 2000. With a long-term EMBO fellowship at the University College London and the European Bioinformatics Institute she studied structural interfaces and networks of protein-protein interactions in the group of Prof. Janet Thornton. Nooren has been line manager bioinformatics in crop protection biotechnology at Devgen NV in Ghent, Belgium, and associate director bioinformatics at the Target Discovery group of Galapagos in Leiden, the Netherlands. In 2007 she founded Darwin Digits, a bioinformatics service company. She worked with several industrial and academic organizations, including in ICT and diagnostics. She holds various patents for gene targets that were selected using innovative bioinformatics technologies.
Besides her career in bioinformatics and R&D (research and development) management she is active in science and technology communication and innovation. She was the first Fablab Manager in the Netherlands at Mediamatic, initiating an innovative knowledge sharing environment for digital fabrication. Nooren is involved in art and science projects and the driving force behind Science Café Leiden since 2007.
Besides her activities at Darwin Digits, since 2008 she is Managing Director of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, Leiden University. As of 2011 she is also Project Manager at the University of Amsterdam of the e-BioGrid project (BiG Grid, NBIC) building an e-infrastructure for life science research. Her interests lie in bioinformatics tools and infrastructure, systems biology modeling, gene networks, and science management and valorization.
