NBIC meets Science Teachers
23 Apr 2010
NBIC's Bioinformatics@school, aimed at promoting bioinformatics as a topic in high schools, is actively engaging with science teachers. On Thursday April 22, NBIC presents the "Bioinformatics: a bit of life"-workshop (one of the DNA Labs on the Road) at a refresher course for engineering teachers. On Wednesday April 28, NBIC organises a workshop during the 'NLT-regiobijeenkomst', a refresher course for science teachers. Here, the Bioinformatics@school team and science teachers will discuss the set-up of a new bioinformatics module for the 'NLT' course, an integrated course on biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and informatics in Dutch high schools. At the national 'science teachers day' on June 11, NBIC will be hosting the bioinformatics part of the programme. And finally in July, NBIC will present a research poster on the project 'Empowering teachers to use bioinformatics tools in biology education' at the ERIDOB, European Researchers In Didactics Of Biology, conference. This research project is a collaboration between NBIC and the Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University.
A quick update on the DNA Labs on the Road; during the school year 2009/2010 approximately 1800 high school students (77 classes) have participated in the workshop "Bioinformatics: a bit of life". On May 17, the registration for the school year 2010/2011 will be opened for teachers to enroll their class(es).
