Abstract

In most cases, form and structure of corals are determined on the micro-level ? the classical method. In this project, the research will focus on gene expression in related corals that exhibit differences in morphology, with a particular emphasis on genes associated with calcification. The resulting model for gene expression will be coupled to a growth-model that includes variations in the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions. This combination of models will lead to a deeper insight into the adverse effects on the calcification process due to an increase in atmospherical CO2 and acidification of the oceans.
