Abstract
In the single-celled organism Bacillus subtilis, the formation process of spores can adapt to extreme circumstances. However, even though all cells are identical they do not exhibit the same mode of adaptation. The organism's genetic network regulates the various responses in order to spread the risks, i.e. bet-hedging, and maximise the chances for survival. Using on mathematical models, the researchers will make careful predictions of B. subtilis' behaviour and develop a model for the genetic regulation system.
