Principal Research

Alexander Gorbalenya (born Lisichansk, Ukraine/USSR in 1952, PhD from Chumakov Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitides, Moscow, in 1984, Doctor of Science – Habilitation equivalent - from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia/USSR in 1991) is a molecular virologist who discovered the power of then-nascent bioinformatics when characterizing an RNA virus enzyme during his PhD studies in early 1980-ties. Since that he has been applying bioinformatics to learn about function, structure and evolution of viruses. Results of his research led to paradigm shifts in virology and beyond. They inspired numerous experimental studies. Gorbalenya led/leads bioinformatics-based research in EU-funded projects concerned with viruses, including Vizier, Grace, Silver and EUVIRNA. Gorbalenya conducted his studies in leading research centers in Russia and the USA before moving to The Netherlands in 2001 to join the Department of Medical Microbiology, the Leiden University Medical Centre. He is Leiden University Fund Professor of Applied Bioinformatics in Virology (since 2009), and is Professor at Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics, Lomonosov Moscow State University (since 2007), facilitating collaboration in bioinformatics between Moscow and Leiden (MoBiLe). Gorbalenya published over 180 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in English and Russian. He organized and chaired many international symposiums, and serves on Editorial Boards of Virology and Virus Research. In 2011 he was elected Vice-President of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses which Executive Committee he joined in 2005.
