Bioinformatics@school
Bringing bioinformatics to the classroom
Even though bioinformatics touches upon many aspects of everyday life – health, nutrition, environmental care, forensics – and is a major element of modern research in the life sciences, to most high school pupils the topic is completely unknown. But as these youngsters are potentially tomorrow's scientists, NBIC and the Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI) are actively bringing bioinformatics to the classroom via the Bioinformatics@school-project.
This project includes:
- Educational websites www.bioinformaticaindeklas.nl (Dutch) and www.bioinformaticsatschool.eu (English) with free online educational modules and information on bioinformatics.
- Hands-on workshop 'Bioinformatics: a bit of life' as part of the DNA labs on the road.
- Teacher trainings for high school teachers to guide teachers through bioinformatics and help them to develop their own educational modules.
- Newsletter of Bioinformatics@school (Dutch) to keep updated. Subscribe via hienke.sminia@removethis.nbic.nl.
